Another proud day for the parish with three of our young members winning Leinster Juvenile Colleges A medals yesterday with St. Kieran’s College. St. Kieran’s were up against Good Counsel of New Ross. Congrats to Billy Dowling, Aaron McAvoy and Sean Roberts!
The 3rd Round of the St. Canice’s Credit Union HL took place in Dunnamaggin on Wednesday 22nd May. A large crowd eagerly anticipated a competitive game but were left disappointed with the fare on offer. The locals came up short on the night and had to give way to a physically stronger and very driven Rower-Inistioge on the night. GBC were under pressure from the throw in and it took them the first quarter to get somewhat settled on the ball. However, after a GBC goal attempt was saved off the line, to be followed quickly by a goal at the other end of the field it was evident that this was not to be GBC’s night.

The Junior A team continued their winning campaign last Friday 3rd May when they travelled South to take on Carrickshock in Hugginstown. With the return of a couple of players from injury and illness numbers were good and GBC went into the match with confidence. This confidence looked somewhat premature as it was Carrickshock who had the much better start. They quickly built up a 1-3 to 0-2 lead before GBC settled down. With each side matching one another score for score it was not a surprise that the teams went in at half time all square on a score of 1-9 each.

Congratulations to Martin Brennan who won our Club’s Féile Skills competition at the weekend.
Martin will now go on to represent our club in the County Féile Skills Competition and we wish him the very best in that!
The Junior A team’s second outing (Rd 1 v Erins Own yet to be played) saw GBC take on Young Ireland’s in Tom Ryall Park on Saturday 27th April. GBC were missing at least eight players due to illness and injury but even so put up a spirited display from the throw in. Guilty of some wayward shooting the GBC side should have been more in control of the game from the start and were disappointed to be a point behind at the interval.

Goals win games and this was to prove to be the difference in a sunny Palmerstown on Saturday 20th April 2019, when the two 2017 Intermediate Finalists met.
The opening exchanges were tough and would remain so for the first half. The teams were level on 0-3 a-piece in the 12th minute but proceedings were halted for the next quarter of an hour as a serious injury to GBC’s full-back Bob Murphy resulted in him being removed to hospital. After the resumption, GBC’s Sean Ryan scored a wonderful goal which gave the locals the lead, which they subsequently would not relinquish. Goal-keeper Ciaran Hoyne made two impressive saves before the end of the first half which kept the half time score to GBC 1-7 St.Patrick’s 0-8.

The GBC Juniors had their first League match last Saturday evening 13th April, in a cold and blustery Larchfield. There are eleven teams in the group which will mean this group of players will have ten matches over the coming months.

After the excitement of 2018 it was back to basics on Sunday 7th April when GBC started their Senior campaign with an eagerly anticipated opener against city side Dicksboro.

Well done to our clubmen Killian Egan, Aaron Brennan and Stephen Keoghan who were crowned All Ireland Colleges champions with St. Kieran’s College on Saturday 30th March 2018 and to St. Kieran’s Manager Tom Hogan who has had such an important involvement with our club over the years. St. Kieran’s were up against Presentation Athenry and came out winners on a scoreline of 1-15 to 1-12 with both Aaron and Killian getting on the scoreboard, Aaron with 1 point and Killian with 2 long range points in the dying moments, both with a very significant contribution all over the pitch! Another very proud day for our little parish!
Great to see some of our juvenile club members taking part in this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade along with the fantastic Ballycallan Fife and Drum Band!
