After the excitement of 2018 it was back to basics on Sunday 7th April when GBC started their Senior campaign with an eagerly anticipated opener against city side Dicksboro.
In next to ideal conditions in a crowded Ballyragget, GBC set out their stall early and fiercely contested every ball. Guilty of some wayward shooting, the locals should have been closer to their opponents but instead were 0-1 to 0-5 behind after thirteen minutes. However, with points from Ciaran Hoyne (f) and a goal from Billy Ryan, GBC went into half time 1-7 to 0-7 ahead.
Dicksboro had the better start to the second half but while dominating, could only command a three point lead heading into the final quarter. A goal by Aaron Brennan levelled the match and with the defence in flying form, GBC took the lead on three occasions in the closing minutes. However, a goal from Dicksboro was to prove the turning point and despite valiant efforts by GBC they were to lose by two points.
Final Score: GBC 2-11 Dicksboro 1-16.
Scores: Billy Ryan (1-2) Sean Ryan (0-3) Aaron Brennan (1-0) Conor Murphy (0-3 (2f) Ciaran Hoyne (0-2 f) Sean O’Dwyer (0-1)
