The first round of the Roinn B U-21 Hurling Championship took place in St. John’s Park, Kilkenny on Sunday 5th November last. Graigue-Ballycallan’s opponents were Young Irelands, Gowran. Past encounters between these two protagonists over the last few years have always been tight affairs and the GBC management expected nothing different on this occasion.
GBC got the dream start with a quick 1-1 on the board in the opening few minutes. The scores came fast for the locals as they settled to the task and ran into an early lead in the first quarter, a lead, as it materialised, they were never to surrender. Young Ireland’s were somewhat dependant on their free-taker to keep them in touch and at half-time the score was: GBC 1-14 Young Irelands 0-7.
In the second half GBC stamped their authority on the game and despite a spirited display from Gowran GBC ran out easy winners on a final score of:
GBC 2-23 Young Irelands 0-12.
Next up is a quarter final appearance against James Stephens “B” in Danesfort on next Saturday at 2.30pm.
Scores: Sean Ryan 0-9 (0-7fs), Shane Hennessy 1-5, Aaron Brennan 1-2, Billy Ryan 0-3, Colum Prendiville 0-2, Ciaran Hogan 0-1, Philly Cahill 0-1
