Intermediate Hurling Championship 1st Round v St. Lachtain’s – 16/09/2017

Report by Philomena Brennan:

The eagerly awaited First Round of the Michael Lyng Intermediate Championship took place last Saturday 16th September in a rain sodden Jenkinstown. The importance of this match was not lost on all present as a defeat would ensure the losers a place in the Intermediate Relegation Final, a place no one wanted to be. St. Lachtain’s got off to a dream start and had 1-1 on the scoreboard in a matter of minutes after GBC conceded an early penalty.

However, this proved to be a catalyst as GBC got down to business and played as a unit, drawing level from a well worked goal from Billy Ryan. With the six backs playing well, aided in no small part, by several great saves from goal-keeper Ciaran Hoyne, GBC went into the break 1-8 to 1-5 in front. They went from strength to strength in the second half and even though conditions deteriorated GBC proved to be the stronger side and were worthy winners in the end, winning on a scoreline of GBC: 2-15 St. Lachtain’s 2-8. This was a great performance from all the players and it has earned them a quarter final appearance against Thomastown in St. John’s Park on this coming Sunday.

Scores: Billy Ryan 2-3, Sean Ryan 0-8 (0-6 fs), Bob Murphy, Jesse Roberts, Richie Keoghan, Colum Prendiville 0-1 each
