On 2nd October our Intermediate Camogie team took on Rower Inistioge in the Championship Semi Final. The sides met in last year’s Semi Final also, which went to a replay with St. Brigid’s narrowly missing out on a county final position. This year it was again Rower Inistioge who came out on top. The venue was the Kells Rd James Stephen’s pitch but bad fog on the morning meant the match had to be pushed back for half an hour.
The match commenced with a first minute point from The Rower from a 45′ and soon after Eadaoin Murphy opened the St. Brigid’s scoring with a point from a free. Just one minute later a ball came from the opposition’s midfield and dropped into the St. Brigid’s net. They were on top from here and scored a further two points before Eadaoin Murphy scored a second free seven minutes in. This was to be the girls last score of the first half while Inistioge added another two points from frees to their tally. The backs were under severe pressure as the forwards had no luck. The last twenty minutes of the first half were scoreless with both teams putting pressure on each other. Both sets of backs were performing very well and were strong in their defending. Eimear Keoghan almost got in for a goal just before the half time whistle after snatching a breaking ball on the edge of the small square but her shot narrowly missed the goals.
Half time score 1-5 to 0-2.
St. Brigid’s came out on top from the whistle and scored 1-1 unanswered in the first eight minutes, the whopper of a goal coming from captain Laureena Murphy and a point from Eimear Keoghan. Only a minute later mayhem in the St. Brigid’s square ended in the Rower getting their second goal of the game. This put them up by five points again. Eadaoin Murphy got two more points before a third, close-range goal went in for Inistioge. This left the score at 3-6 to 1-5. The girls were unlucky to have two balls hit the cross-bar and upright but substitute Sarah Dunphy then came on and hand-passed the girl’s second goal. This was then answered by a point from the opposition. Eadaoin Murphy then put over the girls final score with ten minutes to go. Rower Inistioge followed this up with three more points which left the girls seven points short at the final whistle.
Final score 3-10 to 2-6.
