Graigue Ballycallan Intermediates got the season proper off to a start on Sunday against Glenmore in Dunnamaggin. The sides traded points in a lack-lustre first half and worringly all of GBC’s 7 points bar one came from frees, scored confidently by Conor Murphy. Billy Ryan got the sole point from play, to leave the half time score Glenmore 0-8, GBC 0-7.
On the resumption, the GBC backs came under increasing pressure as possession up front was hard to come by. The GBC full back line stood up well and Conor Murphy frees kept us in touch. In the 19th minute the sky-blue faithful thought the breakthrough had finally arrived; Billy Ryan picked up possession on the right hand sideline and sent across a sublime pass to super-sub Willie O’Connor, who finished well to the net.
With the sides all square at 1-11 to 14 points, Dara Walton and Bob Murphy were clearing their lines well and when a Conor Murphy pointed free put the lads ahead for the first time in the game, momentum appeared to have swung in our favour. However, that was to be GBC’s last point, while Glenmore went on to score 3 points from frees in the closing stages. Final score, Glenmore 0-17, GBC 1-12.
