On Thursday night last the GBC Minors opened their campaign against O’Loughlin’s in the first round of the Roinn A League in Tom Ryall Park.
For most of the first half the locals matched their opponents point for point and by the 28th minute the sides were level, 6 points apiece. At that point a lapse in concentration in the GBC defence let O’Loughlin’s carry the ball through for 2 well placed goals to alternate bottom corners.
Despite a six point deficit, the lads never slackened off their work rate and were rewarded with a well worked goal finished by Sean Ryan, early in the second half. The visitors were restricted to 4 points in the second half, but that was enough for them to run out winners by 2 points, O’Loughlins 2-10, GBC 1-11.
Sean Ryan scored all but 2 points of the GBC total, while Aaron Brennan scored the remaining 2. Plenty of scope for improvement by others on the scoring front next time out!
Killian Egan was the stand out player on the field, while Evan Walsh also put in a good performance.
This was a good start to a long season and were it not for some brief lapses in concentration the result could have been different.
A thought for the next day:
“A great player is one who when a team is not doing well becomes one of the leaders” Pele
