Well done to our Intermediate camogie team who beat a tough Tullaroan side in the League Final on Saturday 29th August in Clara. The girls proved too strong though and showed great determination and nerve to come out on top. A huge thank you to all who came to support the girls on the day, it was fantastic to see such a great crowd. Thankfully, the weather held up for the duration of the game and there was some great displays of hurling throughout.
Tullaroan were the first to register on the scoreboard with a point after three minutes. St. Brigid’s first score of the game came when Bronagh Neary scored her first point of the day from a 45 in the sixth minute. Two minutes later Bronagh found the net after grabbing a breaking ball on the edge of the square. From here, Tullaroan pushed on and scored 1-2 and that was to be their last for the half leaving the score at 1-3 to 1-1 after 21 minutes in favour of The Sash. The St. Brigid’s backs held the fort for the last ten minutes and were a solid defense with Nicola Butler and Therese Muldowney controlling the play and the younger girls really standing up and taking charge. Captain Laureena Murphy tapped over a point after she grabbed the deflected ball from a saved penalty taken by Bronagh Neary. Bronagh hit the back of the net again in the 26th minute and Aisling Dunphy slotted over a point to finish off the scoring for the first half. Half time score was 2-3 to 1-3.
Therese Muldowney was the first to score in the second half with a well taken point from long range. Tullaroan replied with a point from a free and Bronagh Neary again followed suit with her third point of the day. Seventeen minutes into the second half Sarah Dunphy was introduced. Tullaroan scored their second goal to narrow the difference to a point after eighteen minutes. The girls pushed on from here and scored a further three unanswered points. Due to great defending and work rate from both the backs and forwards the girls kept Tullaroan under wraps and they only scored one point in the last 15 minutes. Eadaoin Murphy finished off the scoring for the locals, leaving the final score at 2-9 to 2-5.
Captain Laureena Murphy was presented with the cup and hopefully it won’t be the last time we see her lift silverware this year! The girls now play the championship semi final on the 27th September at 11.30am. Opposition and venue to be confirmed.
