All roads led to John Locke Park, Callan once again last Sunday for the replay between Graigue-Ballycallan and Mullinavat. After a thrilling encounter in horrendous conditions the previous Sunday, hopes were high that GBC could go one better on this occasion.
While GBC had the much better start in the drawn game, it was the southern opposition that sprang into life from the throw-in.Mullinavat totally dominated the first half, assisted by a strong breeze. They were indeed deserving leaders at the break.
Half Time: GBC 0-4 Mullinavat 1-12.
GBC however gave their all in the second half which saw them on top in possession which resulted in Mullinavat pulling back for the last fifteen minutes. Despite GBC outscoring them in the second half, the damage had been done earlier and try as they did GBC could only narrow the gap to 5 points.
Full Time: GBC 1-13 Mullinavat 1-18
Scorers: C. Murphy 0-9 (9Fs), S.Ryan 1-3, B.Ryan 0-1(Sideline).
This brought to a close GBC’s first year at senior level in Kilkenny since 2013. The last eighteen months have seen the club enjoy unprecedented success at adult level. Winning the Intermediate and Leinster Club Finals in 2018, created in the process some wonderful memories which will live long in the minds of both young and old. We are all truly grateful to this great panel of players. With a very young team, (aided by some remarkable exceptions!!! ) the first priority in 2019 was to retain our senior status and establish in the minds of the players that they could compete at the top level in Kilkenny hurling. This has been achieved and players, mentors and supporters alike can now take a well earned rest as we all look forward with increased enthusiasm to 2020.
Date for your Diary: GBC 50th Celebration and Book Launch in the Set Theatre on Friday 22nd November 2019. Details nearer the date!!
