The second round of the Michael Lyng Intermediate Hurling League took place in a wind-swept Piltown on Friday 5th May last. Following GBC’s recent defeat to the Fenians this was a must win game as the GBC team took to the field. As expected the first half was very much dominated by the extremely strong breeze which proved very hard to manage as the game progressed. While GBC had the better of the early exchanges scores were hard to come by and following misses from both sides the first score came in the thirteenth minute. GBC led by 0-4 to Glenmore 0-2 coming up to half time but a lapse in the GBC concentration resulted in a well taken Glenmore goal. Glenmore tacked on another point but GBC responded with a late point and went into the break GBC 0-6 Glenmore 1-5.
The second half saw both defences on top, and scores were hard to come by. As the game remained at stalemate it was felt that a goal could sway the balance either way but it was Glenmore who obliged. Two points in quick succession by their oppoents saw GBC five points behind with ten minutes remaining. However, the local boys quickly re-grouped and gained control on every line. A Sean Ryan goal started the come back and GBC hurled with determination for the remaining period to ensure that they would come away with the two points. The victory was well-deserved and the panel and mentors now turn their thoughts to their next game which will be against Dunnamaggin in a fortnight’s time.
