Our Minors played their first game of the year against a tough Freshford side on Wednesday 19th April in Kilmanagh. It was clear from the start that both sides would have to put in serious work as there was tough competition for the ball at each position on the field.
Both teams put scores on the board in the first five minutes from both frees and play. In the 10th minute Freshford scored their first goal but St. Brigid’s picked back up and scored 1-3 in reply with 1-2 coming from Eimear Keoghan and one point from Laoise. Freshford were given another three opportunities from frees and two were executed. The opening half ended with a scoreline of 1-8 to to 1-7 to Freshford.
The second half began with a point from Freshford and then one from Kym Ryan soon after followed by a converted free from Eimear Keoghan. The next five minutes were well fought out with both sides getting goals from well taken shots. Two more points from Eimear meant St. Brigid’s went a point ahead but in the 15th minute Freshford scored their third goal from an unlucky deflection. Despite the trojan work from the St. Brigid’s backs the opposition scored another two points along with putting two wide. Eimear again came back with two points, one from a free. The last minute seen the girls two points down with a goal opportunity for St. Brigid’s from a free but was denied by Freshford on the goal line. The final score ended up 2-15 to 3-14. Hard luck to the girls.
