Freshford hosted the second round of the Intermediate Hurling League between GBC and Ballyragget on Sunday last. Despite the underdogs tag, GBC were competitive in all positions.
Six minutes in, Billy Ryan shot for goal from the 21 and the ball skidded off the goalie’s hurl into the net. This left the score 1-2 to 2 points and was a tonic start for the lads. The sides traded points for the remainder of the half and just before the half time whistle, Kieran Kennedy carried the ball forward from half back position to score an inspirational point. GBC 1-6, Ballyragget 0-9 at half time.
In the second half, Kevin Kelly pushed Ballyragget ahead with several well taken points, but Conor Murphy and Shane Buttler kept GBC in touch with four and two points respectively. A fine save by PJ Trant and points from Willie O’Connor and Billy Ryan kept the result in doubt to the end. With time almost up, Conor Murphy pointed two frees in succession to grab a GBC victory by a single point, GBC 1-15, St Patrick’s Ballyragget 0-17.
