GBC U21’s played Cloneen in a one sided north quarter final on Sunday in chilly Ballyragget. In the first half GBC were dominant but their wides tally mounted. Eamonn Egan, Willie O’Connor and Conor Murphy did manage to find the range and Eoin Corcoran began to dominate mid-field. With only three points to show after 20 minutes, Conor Murphy drove through the Cloneen defence and blasted a shot to the net. Points from Willie O’Connor, Darragh Egan and Eoin Robinson followed to bring the score at half time to read GBC 1-8, Cloneen 0-1.
In the second half, Darragh Egan moved to mid-field and Philly Cahill to wing forward. There was a greater urgency in the GBC lad’s play and they picked off points from all over the field as superior fitness became a key factor. Billy Ryan and James Gleeson addded two further goals and GBC ran out comfortable winners, 3-17 to 0-3. Next Saturday’s meeting with Conahy Shamrocks who are capable of high scoring will be a more even contest.
